So you’ve finished ACCA. Congratulations, that’s not a small thing. Now what?
For a lot of people, the real dream wasn’t just passing the exams. It was using that qualification to build a life somewhere new: London, Toronto, Sydney, wherever. The good news is that ACCA was built with exactly this in mind. It’s recognised in a huge number of countries, so unlike some local accounting qualifications that only really mean something in the country where you got them, ACCA travels with you reasonably well.
That said, “reasonably well” isn’t the same as “automatically.” Moving abroad still takes some homework. Here’s what that actually looks like.
Why ACCA Gives You a Head Start
ACCA members aren’t just scattered randomly around the world, there’s an actual global community of them, and ACCA has spent years building relationships with local accounting bodies in different countries. That means in a lot of places, you’re not starting from zero. Someone’s already done the work of explaining who ACCA members are and what they’re capable of.
You can also study for ACCA from almost anywhere, since there are learning providers all over the world. So if you already know where you eventually want to end up, you can sometimes start laying groundwork before you’ve even qualified, not after.
Where People Usually Go
Some countries are just easier than others, mostly because ACCA has stronger ties there.
- UK – This is the classic one. ACCA has deep roots here, plenty of members already work at the big accounting firms, and there are extra routes into membership with other UK bodies too.
- USA – A bit trickier. ACCA and the American CPA body (AICPA) don’t have a formal agreement, so most people need to get their qualification independently evaluated, and depending on the evaluator, you might need extra credit hours to qualify for the CPA exam if that’s your goal.
- Australia and New Zealand – ACCA has a genuine partnership with Chartered Accountants ANZ here. If you’ve got a few years of experience after qualifying, you may be able to get dual membership.
- Canada – Mostly smooth sailing, though a few regulated jobs (like public accounting) need separate CPA Canada credentials in certain provinces.
- Ireland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Luxembourg and Switzerland also have decent support in place for ACCA members.
The rules aren’t the same everywhere, so don’t assume what worked for a friend who moved to Dubai will work the same way for you in Toronto. Look into your specific destination.
What You Actually Need to Do
Find out if your qualification needs to be “evaluated.” Some countries just accept ACCA at face value. Others want an independent body to look at your transcripts and confirm what it’s equivalent to locally. You should check this before you go too far into planning, because it might slow down your timeline or throw it off a bit.
Check if the job you want is “regulated.” In a few countries, certain roles like signing off official accounts, for example; are reserved for members of a specific local body, even if ACCA is otherwise well respected there. It doesn’t mean you can’t do the job eventually, just that there might be an extra local step.
Handle your visa completely separately. This trips people up a lot: ACCA doesn’t arrange visas, work permits, or sponsor anyone’s immigration. That’s between you and the country’s immigration authority. So while you’re figuring out the accounting side, run the visa process in parallel through official government channels, not through ACCA.
Update your details once you land. Once you actually move, log into your myACCA account and update your address. It sounds small, but it’s how you get plugged into local events, meetups, and CPD sessions happening near you instead of ones back home.
Use the local ACCA community. A few regions have ACCA offices doing orientation sessions, webinars, and that sort of local networking stuff really helps for someone who just landed and still doesn’t know anyone. Don’t be too shy to reach out, like go ahead and ask around.
Actually use ACCA’s job tools. ACCA Careers and the Career Navigator aren’t just decoration on the website, they’re a real way to see which employers are hiring internationally qualified accountants and what kind of roles suit your background.
A Few Honest Things to Keep in Mind. Having ACCA doesn’t mean the local qualifications don’t matter at all. Sometimes picking up a local certification alongside it : a CPA, a CA, whatever’s relevant , makes you a stronger candidate, even if it’s not strictly required.
Also, the paperwork is only half of it. Moving to a new country means you also have to sort of adjust to a different work culture, like the whole vibe, different expectations around hours , communication style, even how direct people are during meetings. So, give yourself time to settle in not only on the professional side , but also personally , because it takes a while for everything to feel normal again.
And be realistic about timing and money. Visa processing, credential checks, extra exams , these things take weeks or months, and they usually cost something. Build that into your plans instead of assuming it’ll all move quickly.
Bottom Line
ACCA genuinely does open doors abroad and that part isn’t hype. But the door doesn’t swing open on its own. You still need to check the specifics for wherever you’re headed, sort your visa through the right channels, and lean on the local ACCA community once you get there. Do that groundwork early, and the move abroad becomes a lot less stressful and a lot more likely to actually happen.
